Henry Street Finds a New Home for Its Gala-and a Kindred Spirit Downtown at Independent
"It's energizing-we're launching, not just landing,"
"All hope is local, and this brings that idea to life. Independent shares our values and our geography; together we can activate an entire constellation of stakeholders."
"When David called and asked me to join the board, it was a way to stay tied to the community,"
"And now, through this partnership, that connection feels stronger than ever."
Henry Street Settlement lost its primary annual fundraiser when the Art Dealers Association of America canceled The Art Show, creating a major budget gap. The nonprofit co-founded the fair in 1989 and raised more than $38 million from gala preview nights at the Park Avenue Armory. A rapid virtual campaign generated roughly $600,000, about half of the typical gala revenue, but the shortfall forced difficult program decisions. Henry Street secured a partnership with Independent to host the 2026 gala at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side. The collaboration aims to reconnect fundraising with local geography and stakeholders, aided by board member James Fuentes.
