Ryan Amigable, a 21-year-old man, died in a head-on crash on state Highway 84 due to a race between two other drivers. The Lexus involved lost control and veered into Amigable's lane, causing the collision. The driver of the Lexus was severely injured, while the driver of a GMC pick-up truck fled the scene. Amigable's family expressed deep sorrow, and an online fundraiser for them had raised over $13,000 to cover immediate needs. Investigators are seeking information on the incident and its drivers.
The tragedy that killed Ryan Amigable resulted from the race between two other drivers on westbound state Highway 84 about 6:15 p.m., according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol. Amigable died at the scene.
The Lexus driver suffered major head injuries and went by air ambulance to the Regional Medical Center in San Jose. The CHP did not have an update on his condition early Thursday.
"He never wanted to go out, so he could be safe at home," the fundraising statement said of Amigable. "All he did was work, stay home, and spend his time in his room posing his action figures, which was his hobby and he loved doing it."
The GMC pick-up truck driver fled the scene going west on Highway 84, the CHP said. They added that the GMC was a lifted-four-door-2500 variety with black rims, oversized tires and equipped with a receiver hitch, tow mirrors and chrome bumpers.
