"My son was deployed in 2003 to 2004. So I decided I would start sending him boxes. And all of a sudden the project has grown to where now we send between eight and 10,000 gift bags to our troops who are deployed and we put them in a Christmas stocking,"
"Gives them a little good cheer and it makes us so happy that we can do something. And I'm delighted because this was my dream to make sure that our military knew they were not forgotten,"
Judy Travis launched Stockings for Soldiers after her son’s 2003–2004 deployment, initially sending him care packages. The effort expanded into an annual program that now assembles and ships eight to ten thousand gift bags placed inside Christmas stockings for deployed personnel. Over 22 years the initiative has distributed an estimated 160,000 stockings. Volunteers and organizers aim to boost troop morale by providing holiday cheer and tangible reminders that service members are remembered. The program relies on community support and donations to source, assemble, and ship items that brighten the holidays for military personnel abroad.
