Cal Men's Rowing marks 150 years of grit, glory, and tradition
""Our older alums, they're still getting together, you know, 65, 70 years later and talking about their stories," Frandsen said. "It gets into your blood and it's a lifelong passion.""
""We have the program that we have because of Gary Rogers and its the best collegiate program in the world," Frandsen said."
"That tradition of success includes three Olympic gold medals for the United States (1928, 1932, 1948) and 19 national championships, most recently in 2023."
Cal Men's Rowing began in 1875 and marks its 150th anniversary, making it the oldest sport at the University of California, Berkeley. The program's history includes three Olympic gold medals for the United States (1928, 1932, 1948) and 19 national championships, most recently in 2023. Head coach Scott Frandsen, a former Cal rower and three-time Olympian for Canada, emphasizes the program's strength as rooted in enduring alumni connections and lifelong passion. Philanthropic support from T. Gary Rogers enabled the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center to replace the century-old Ky Ebright Boathouse. Friends of Cal Crew hosted a three-day reunion, gala, and fundraiser for the Rogers Cal Crew Forever Fund.
