Beer Store closures across Ontario present a chance for charities and non-profits to increase bottle collection efforts. The Beer Store processes about 1.6 billion empty containers annually but has closed numerous locations due to competition from convenience stores. Operation Come Home runs a bottle drive through its BottleWorks program, focused on providing employment for homeless youth. As the program expands, it aims to collect more empties and enhance its services. Other groups, such as animal rescues, also benefit from similar bottle collection initiatives.
The Beer Store currently processes about 1.6 billion empty alcohol containers per year. But it has closed dozens of locations across the province since the arrival of beer in convenience stores, and plans to shutter still more this September.
Operation Come Home provides housing, employment and education programs for homeless youth, who staff the BottleWorks program. They ride around in the truck and collect from practically anywhere in Ottawa.
We would be very happy to help people if they find that they're accumulating bottles or that they would like somebody to come pick them up.
We're going to expand the capacity of the program and this timing will help us make sure that the trucks are always full.
