"We feel frustrated and helpless - but as an artist, I feel I have a responsibility to move people to act with generosity. I'm hoping the sculpture I created will move people even a little bit and might, in this case, encourage them to make a contribution towards saving Gaza from further starvation and desolation."
"As I was creating this piece a year ago, I was thinking about how destruction of our world is being targeted at women and children,"
"The scale of suffering in the Gaza Strip is truly catastrophic; over half a million people are enduring famine conditions with 320,000 children under five at risk of malnutrition,"
The sculpture Al Di Là depicts a woman holding the globe to highlight how war in Gaza disproportionately harms women and children. The installation at Bewley’s features prominent QR codes that link to the Gaza Famine Appeal for UNICEF. The woman’s face expresses grief, despair, terror and disgust, but not defeat, while she holds compassion embodied by the globe. The piece aims to move people to act with generosity and encourage donations to prevent further starvation and desolation in Gaza. At least 50,000 people have been reported killed or injured since 2023, and over half a million face famine conditions with 320,000 children under five at risk of malnutrition. Emergency therapeutic food, clean water and maternal support are being delivered on the ground.
