"Named for the street address of our first Writing Center in San Francisco, 826 Valencia was founded in 2002 by educator Nínive Calegari and author Dave Eggers. 826 Valencia has grown to include three Centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a Center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a Center in an affordable housing building in Mission Bay. We also provide programming in classrooms at over thirteen schools around the city. Each of our Writing Centers is fronted by a whimsical store that invites students into a world where imagination reigns."
A fundraiser on September 23, 2025, from 6:00 to 9:30 pm at Southern Pacific Brewing offers $35 tickets to support 826 Valencia. The event features a silent auction, scavenger hunt, and open bar, and is organized by the 826 Valencia Associate Board to celebrate student authors. 826 Valencia supports under-resourced students ages six to eighteen by building creative and expository writing skills and helping teachers inspire student writing. The organization operates three Writing Centers in San Francisco and provides programming in classrooms at over thirteen schools. Each Writing Center is fronted by a whimsical store that sells student publications, with proceeds returning to programs.
