Middle East: Netanyahu vows to increase Lebanon strikes
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised increased strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, saying Israel would not slow down and would increase the power of attacks. Pressure is rising on Netanyahu’s government due to Hezbollah drone attacks targeting Israel’s north, occurring during an election year. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly ordered the reopening of international internet access in Iran. US President Donald Trump said any Iran deal should include additional countries joining the Abraham Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is a solid basis agreed on the path to a deal as exchanges continue between Washington and Tehran. Iran rejected US claims that an agreement to end the conflict is near, while oil prices fell more than 4% to two-week lows amid optimism about a potential deal.
"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to increase the strikes against Islamist militia Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. "We're not going to slow down," Netanyahu said in a video in Hebrew. "The situation obliges us to increase the hits, increase their power," the Israeli leader said, also promising to hit Hezbollah "hip and thigh." This comes as both far-right politicians and large parts of the Israeli public put pressure on Netanyahu's government to find a solution to the Iran-backed militia's drone attacks aimed at Israel's north."
"Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly ordered the reopening of international internet access in the country. US President Donald Trump says Iran deal should include additional countries joining Abraham Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says "there is a pretty solid thing" agreed on the path to a deal as exchanges continue between Washington and Tehran. Iran has poured cold water on US claims that an agreement to end the conflict is near."
"Oil prices nonetheless fell more than 4% to two-week lows on Monday amid optimism that a deal could be in sight. The Israeli army said it hit infrastructure targets belonging to Hezbollah. The pressure on Netanyahu’s government is linked to ongoing Hezbollah drone attacks toward Israel’s north, with the situation unfolding during an election year."
