Footage showed an Israeli army flag raised above Beaufort Castle’s citadel with audible shelling and smoke rising nearby. The fortress commands sweeping views of south Lebanon and is strategically valuable. The crusader fortress dates to the 1100s, changed hands between crusaders and Islamic forces, and was captured by Sultan Baibars in 1268. Israeli forces captured it in 1982, used it as a base during an occupation of southern Lebanon lasting nearly two decades, and withdrew in 2000. The latest capture occurred after days of intense fighting and airstrikes near villages where Israeli troops fought Hezbollah members in rugged terrain, despite a nominal ceasefire in place since April.
