Macron calls for 'citizens' convention' on French school holidays
Briefly

French President Emmanuel Macron has initiated a 'citizens' convention' focused on the organization of the French school year and day. This approach aims to engage a random panel of citizens who will hear expert testimonies and provide recommendations on school schedules and the duration of summer holidays. Macron expressed the necessity of balancing educational needs with family life, noting the impact of long vacations on children's academic performance. The gathered opinions will guide the government but are not binding, aiming for broader societal consensus on this important educational issue.
"It seems necessary to me that we work to ensure that the organisation of pupils' days is more favourable to their development and learning, and that we find a balance to make life easier for families," Macron said in an interview with French daily Le Parisien.
"We have very, very long summer vacations. Children who do not have family support often drop down in their academic level."
"The citizens' convention seemed to me to be the most appropriate tool for consulting the French people. It is a very complex issue that will require building consensus among all those affected by this vast subject."
