Ivory Coast opposition leader resigns but vows to still fight for victory
Briefly

Tidjane Thiam's presidential campaign in Ivory Coast has been halted due to legal challenges regarding his dual citizenship status. After a court ruled that he lost his Ivorian nationality when he acquired French citizenship in 1987, he was struck from the electoral list. Despite stepping down as party leader for the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast - African Democratic Rally (PDCI), he remains committed to leading the party towards the 2025 elections. Concurrently, President Ouattara’s future as a candidate remains uncertain amidst the exclusion of key opposition figures from the race.
This decision does not change the commitment I made in December 2023 to personally lead our party to victory in October 2025. Despite resigning as party leader, my vision remains intact.
Thiam's campaign faltered primarily due to the dual citizenship regulation preventing him from running for president, as the court ruled he lost Ivorian nationality after acquiring French citizenship in 1987.
Amid his resignation, Thiam expressed his ongoing dedication to the party's success in future elections, emphasizing the need for unity and support among party activists during challenging times.
President Alassane Ouattara's uncertain future regarding re-election reflects the political instability in Ivory Coast, accentuated by the barring of several prominent opposition figures from the upcoming presidential elections.
