High Seas Treaty: UN's Guterres warns of 'wild west' DW 06/09/2025
Briefly

At the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, Secretary General Antonio Guterres addressed critical issues facing the oceans, declaring that they are the ultimate shared resource currently under threat. Key issues include collapsing fish stocks, rising sea levels, and plastic pollution. The conference aims to ratify the High Seas Treaty, enabling countries to protect about two-thirds of the world’s oceans. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that 50 countries have ratified the treaty while conservation groups criticized France for insufficient actions on local marine protection. Guterres warned that deep-sea mining presents a looming, unregulated threat to ocean health.
The ocean is the ultimate shared resource. But we are failing it. We are witnessing collapsing fish stocks, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and destructive fishing practices.
To truly protect our oceans, we need rigorous commitments globally. The High Seas Treaty allows for protection of nearly two-thirds of the world's oceans which are largely unregulated.
The adoption of the High Seas Treaty is a monumental step forward. With 50 countries already ratified, it is a 'done deal' for the protection of marine environments.
Conservation groups express concerns that the steps taken, while positive, are still insufficient for comprehensive protection of marine biodiversity, particularly in French waters.
