Gabon swears in ex-military chief Oligui as president
Briefly

Brice Oligui Nguema has officially taken office as president of Gabon following his successful election victory, which he secured with nearly 95% of the vote. His ascent to power followed a coup that ended a 55-year dynasty of the Bongo family. The inauguration was celebrated by a massive turnout and the presence of many African leaders. As the new leader, Oligui faces substantial challenges, including the need to address economic diversification and infrastructure improvements in a nation deeply reliant on oil revenues but burdened by debt.
The Bongo era was characterised by a tightly controlled patronage system that enriched elites while leaving most citizens excluded from Gabon's oil-fuelled prosperity.
Oligui, 50, rose to power after deposing Ali Bongo, whose family had ruled Gabon for 55 years, promising a departure from the dynastic politics of the past.
The inauguration at Angondje Stadium in the north of capital Libreville drew some 40,000 supporters and was attended by more than 20 African heads of state.
Oligui faces serious challenges in leading the oil-rich country, which needs to revamp crucial infrastructure and diversify its economy, but is heavily indebted.
