Unions in France have outright rejected proposals for border control measures aimed at intercepting migrant boats before they can reach the United Kingdom. They argue that such interventions, especially against overcrowded vessels, pose a significant risk of danger to the lives of those on board. French police currently face restrictions that limit their ability to act in the water due to legal loopholes. Calls for review in policing practices indicate a growing concern over maritime safety, while contrasting views highlight successful methods used by neighboring countries. This reflects ongoing tensions surrounding immigration and border control in France.
We have to review our organisation so that we can board these boats... arriving to pick up migrants.
People don't seem to realise how dangerous it is to try to carry out arrests at sea, while trying to force a boat to change course.
The potential for disaster, including further deaths, is immense. Turning us into sea police is not the way forward.
If a potentially vulnerable boat is stable then it should not be interfered with until it reaches a safe place on the shore.
