France gives air base $1.7 billion nuclear facelift
Briefly

In response to increasing security concerns, France is initiating a $1.7 billion renovation of its Luxeuil-Saint Sauveur air base. The renovation, projected to complete by 2035, will expand the base to accommodate new generation hypersonic missiles and the latest Rafale jets, enhancing France's nuclear capabilities. It will be the fourth French base designed for nuclear storage, with significant updates required for infrastructure, including longer runways and new hangars to replace outdated facilities. Base commander Colonel Emmanuel Roux emphasizes the challenge of modernizing the base as a monumental task, akin to constructing a cathedral.
Luxeuil will become the fourth, but most modern, base in France capable of storing nuclear weapons.
We will have to redo everything for the infrastructure, the colonel said.
We have 10 years to build the best base in France with planes that do not exist (yet), a nuclear weapon that does not exist and technicians who are not yet in school.
