A report by the Israeli government indicates that antisemitism has notably increased in 2024, with a sixfold rise in certain countries following the October 7 Hamas attack. Minister Amichai Chikli highlighted Spain and Ireland as becoming increasingly hostile toward Israel and the Jewish community after both nations recognized Palestine and criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza. Chikli's remarks came in response to the accusations of war crimes leveled against Israel by both countries' leaders. Spain and Ireland have rejected these antisemitism claims, defending their right to free expression.
In an earlier exclusive interview with Euronews last week, Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin called the situation in Gaza "hell on earth," accusing Israel of committing what he called "war crimes" and criticising the EU's "lack of response."
Chikli strongly rejected the accusation and shot back at Ireland for its stance, claiming that the leaderâs comments during Holocaust Remembrance Day represented a form of violent antisemitism.
