Construction on the A69 autoroute in south-west France is set to resume following a stay issued by the Toulouse Administrative Court of Appeal. This decision allows continued work on the disputed 53km stretch between Toulouse and Castres, even after an earlier ruling in February halted it due to environmental concerns. The appeal court indicated that the justification for public interest was significant enough to warrant reinstating previously canceled environmental permits, while pending investigations and appeals continue over the motorway project’s impact on local ecosystems.
On February, the Toulouse administrative court had ordered work on the long-planned 53km stretch of autoroute to be shut down because the expected benefits were not sufficient.
The Administrative Court of Appeal considered the argument for a major public interest reason capable of justifying the granting of an exemption from harming protected species to be serious.
The judgment concluded: "The stay ... thus issued has the effect of reinstating the environmental permits that had been cancelled until the court rules on the three appeals."
