'We want protection': Petition demands women-only carriages on Paris transport
""We don't want to be separated - we want to be protected!!! Offer us solutions, not promises. "But if there are no effective solutions, we may have to seriously consider separate carriages - an extreme, desperate, and drastic measure (...) Women should not have to feel fear every time they travel. They have the right to travel in peace and safety.""
""We do not currently have plans to create separate carriages""
""All new trains and Metros are currently being built with an open-plan design, which allows passengers to move freely from one end of the train to another, helping to combat isolation.""
A petition titled "For women and children-only carriages on trains in unsafe areas" launched on October 24 on Change.org and has gathered over 25,000 signatures. The petitioner said women seek protection and may consider separate carriages if effective solutions are not provided. A call was made for a pilot project on RER and Transilien lines, with references to similar schemes in Japan and India. Transport authorities said there are no current plans for segregated carriages and that new trains use open-plan designs to reduce isolation. The petition followed a viral video of an attempted rape on the RER C; police later arrested a suspect. A March 2025 government report found 91 percent of public-transport victims of sexist and sexual violence in France were women.
