Trump tariffs hurt French wine and spirits exports
"Geopolitical tensions, commercial conflicts, exchange rate fluctuations, and a loss of confidence by households weighed on our exports,"
"In the United States, the imposition of customs duties and an unfavourable exchange rate have heavily impacted the overall result,"
"The anti-dumping duties have severely penalised exports of cognac, armagnac and other wine-based French spirits,"
French wine and spirits export value fell 7.9 percent to €14.3 billion in 2025, with volume down 3.3 percent. Exports to the United States dropped 21 percent, while the United States accounted for 21 percent of the export market. Wine export value fell 4.1 percent, and spirits plunged 17.4 percent. Cognac sales fell 23.8 percent to €2.3 billion. Contributing factors included US tariffs that rose from 10 to 15 percent in 2025, an unfavourable exchange rate, geopolitical and commercial tensions, weaker household confidence, stockpiling by wholesalers, and Chinese anti-dumping measures targeting EU brandy.
