In response to the killing of a Muslim worshipper in a mosque in southern France, marches against Islamophobia have taken place. The assailant, who remains at large, is a non-Muslim French citizen of Bosnian descent, and was identified after allegedly stabbing the victim approximately 50 times. French authorities, including Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, have condemned the act as Islamophobic, while President Emmanuel Macron stressed that racism and religious hatred have no place in France. The Grand Mosque of Paris demanded clarity on whether the attack is being treated as terrorism.
After initially praying alongside the man, the attacker stabbed the victim about 50 times before fleeing the scene.
Racism and hatred based on religion can have no place in France. Freedom of worship cannot be violated, President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X.
It is essential to arrest him before he claims more victims, according to regional prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini.
The Grand Mosque of Paris condemned the attack in a statement and called on authorities to quickly shed light on the reasons behind it.
