"One such email claims to be from state health body Ameli and says that "a new digital version of your Carte Vitale must be downloaded in your personal health space. This process is necessary to maintain your health cover". It instructs users to click on the link within 48 hours, or risk losing health cover, adding that failure to do so will result in "suspension of reimbursements of health costs" and "an automatic €19.90 fee"."
"In fact, the digital health card is entirely optional - people can sign up for it if they wish but if those chose not to it will not affect their health cover. There is no need for an old card to be updated. From time to time, the French Assurance maladie may invite users to update their carte vitale in order keep it operational, particularly if it has not been used recently."
The dark green carte vitale serves as proof for entitlement to full or partial state reimbursement of healthcare costs. A digital version of the carte vitale is available for phones and is optional; physical cards remain valid. Scammers send phishing emails claiming recipients must download a new digital card within 48 hours to maintain health coverage, threatening suspension of reimbursements and a €19.90 fee. The phishing aims to obtain personal details by luring users to malicious links. Genuine carte vitale updates, when necessary, are carried out in person at pharmacies or health centres.
