Unions representing workers across railways, pharmacies, taxis, energy and other sectors have issued strike calls for September and signalled support for a nationwide 'blockade France' action. The government returns in September facing the 2026 Budget, which seeks 44 billion in savings including the loss of two public holidays and has proved unpopular. An online group called Bloquons tout called for a total blockade on September 10 by refusing to work, shop or attend school. Several unions including Force Ouvriere and the CGT have announced multi-sector actions, the intersyndicale will meet on September 1 to coordinate, taxi drivers plan blockades from September 5, and train driver unions CGT and Sud have announced actions.
When the French government goes back to work in September, the first item on the to-do list is the 2026 Budget, which must attempt to get a grip on the country's spiralling deficit. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou released a draft Budget plan in July with 44 billion in savings (including the loss of two public holidays), which unsurprisingly has proved unpopular.
But an increasing number of unions have indicated that either they will join the movement, or they intend to call separate strikes at the start of September. The intersyndicale - the group representing all of France's main union federations- is due to meet on September 1st to discuss coordinated action, but several unions have already announced multi-sector September actions, including Force Ouvriere and the CGT.
