France will transform national military service into a voluntary program of about 10 months that provides weapons handling and other military skills training. Recruits will be paid between €900 and €1,000 per month during their service. Initial recruitment aims for 2,000–3,000 people in the first year, rising to 50,000 a year by 2035. The program is intended to create a pool of trained individuals callable in emergencies, while avoiding a return to compulsory conscription and not equating to sending young people to Ukraine. France currently has about 47,000 formal reservists.
