Emmanuel Macron rejected Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs aimed at countries opposing his intentions regarding Greenland, calling the threats unacceptable and inconsistent with international law and alliances. Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson warned the EU would not be blackmailed. Trump announced 10% tariffs from 1 February and 25% from 1 June targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland. EU leaders said such tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. European leaders in Paraguay, gathered to sign a Mercosur trade deal, were surprised by the outburst. The European Parliament is likely to pause ratification of a US trade deal.
