Jogger shot in the leg in hunting accident in south-eastern France
"The incident occurred on Sunday, with the hunter responsible reportedly participating in a wild boar hunt with 15 other hunters, the local prosecutor's office told the French press. The prosecutor's office said that the "shooter had followed the rules" and that the hunting group had followed firearms handling procedures, as well as other hunting rules related to which animals can be hunted (the plan de chasse) and site security (i.e., not hunting within 150 metres of homes)."
"For big game hunting that uses firearms, hunters must wear fluorescent clothing. Additionally, signs (such as 'Battue en cours' or 'Chasse en cours') must be posted before the hunt begins on public roads in order to indicate to passersby the main entrances into the designated hunting area. New rules in 2020 have also made it so that hunters must complete basic safety training every ten years."
A man in his 20s was shot in the knee while jogging in a wooded area in Vaison-la-Romaine, Vaucluse. The shooter was reportedly participating in a wild boar hunt with about 15 other hunters. The prosecutor said the shooter had followed rules and that the hunting group observed firearms handling procedures, species-targeting rules (plan de chasse) and site security measures, including not hunting within 150 metres of homes. The Vaucluse hunting federation called the incident regrettable and said 62 percent of local hunters had safety training. The national biodiversity office recorded 11 hunting-season deaths in 2024–2025, all hunters. Hunters must wear fluorescent clothing for big game hunts, post warning signs on public roads before battues, and complete basic safety training every ten years. Joggers and walkers should wear bright colours and avoid marked hunting areas.
