"It's a fact: I grew up in a collaborationist family. They all were - to varying degrees,"
"The author's resentment toward the targeted individuals permeates the entire work, which is conceived as a genuine act of family vengeance,"
"The plaintiffs argue the writer acted in "utter bad faith" and there is an "absence of evidence" for the alleged collaboration of their relatives with the Nazis."
"a harrowing but elegantly constructed rot-riddled family romance"
Historian Cécile Desprairies, 68, faces a libel lawsuit brought by family members after promoting a debut novel she says is inspired by her childhood. Plaintiffs, including her brother and another relative, accuse her and the publisher of libel against their mother, a great-uncle and the half-brother of their grandmother, claiming those relatives are clearly identifiable despite changed names. Plaintiffs deny the collaboration allegations, allege bad faith, and describe the work as motivated by resentment and vengeance. The novel received strong reviews in English, including praise from the Financial Times.
