French prosecutors requested a seven-year prison sentence for former president Nicolas Sarkozy in an appeal trial over allegations that he sought Libyan financing for his 2007 election. Sarkozy denied wrongdoing and previously became the first modern former French president to be jailed in this case, serving 20 days before release pending appeal. In the first trial, prosecutors also sought seven years, covering allegations of seeking funding from Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya, corruption, illegal campaign financing, and receiving misappropriated Libyan public funds. A lower court imposed five years for the funding-seeking charge but acquitted him of the other charges. Prosecutors described him as an instigator of an alleged pact to receive funding to improve Libya’s international image after bombings. Sarkozy said there was no Libyan money in his campaign. A decision is expected on November 30, with further appeal possible if convicted.
