French motorway starts traffic-sensitive speed limits
"As a result, people driving on the A7 outside of Lyon will have to start paying attention to electronic signs that broadcast the current speed limit, which will be adapted to real-time traffic conditions. Local authorities announced the change in a press release sent out last week, which explained that the goal is to delay the onset of traffic jams and improve user safety, as well as improve air quality."
"The Lyon measure follows a recent decision by local authorities in Paris to decrease the speed limit on the capital's ring road from 70km/h to 50km/h. The goal was to reduce accidents, noise and pollution, and in the first eight months, authorities have recorded a 14 percent drop in accidents. All French motorways technically have a varied speed limit - the usual limit of 130km/h drops to 110km/h if there are adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain."
Local authorities implemented a dynamic speed regulation on the A7 south of Lyon between the city and Saint-Etienne, using electronic signs to set limits in real time. Speed limits will vary from 50 km/h to 110 km/h depending on traffic levels and will drop further in the event of accidents to reduce secondary collisions and improve flow. The scheme covers all three lanes of the A7 travelling south to north between the Ternay interchange and the Feyzin southern urban boulevard interchange. The measure complements existing carpool lanes and a low-emissions zone with staged Crit'Air restrictions.
