"is very stigmatising towards our Muslim compatriots who may feel hurt"
"I am not in favour of it in this way."
"religious law over the laws of the republic"
"to protect children"
France faces a political split over proposed legal limits on wearing the Muslim headscarf by minors. Laurent Wauquiez submitted a bill to ban the veil for minors in public. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez opposed the proposal as very stigmatising and said he was not in favour of it in that way. Nunez called for careful targeting of Islamist extremists who seek to impose religious law over the laws of the republic. Equality Minister Aurore Berge supported a hijab ban for minors to protect children. A Senate report proposed banning Ramadan fasting for those under 16. The debate reflects rising far-right influence and France's large Muslim community ahead of 2027 elections.
