France updates: Government facing defeat in confidence vote DW 09/08/2025
"What's the point of bringing down the government?"
"These are political groups that not only don't agree on anything but, far worse than that, are waging open civil war against each other."
President Emmanuel Macron called snap legislative elections in June 2024 that nearly delivered the far-right National Rally as the largest party. A spontaneous left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front, defeated the far-right in a dramatic second round that produced a 66.63% turnout, the highest since 1997. The coalition united chiefly to oppose Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella and lacked broader policy agreement. Gabriel Attal served as prime minister for eight months before Michel Barnier succeeded him and was toppled by a no-confidence vote in December 2024. François Bayrou faces a fragmented National Assembly with incompatible factions intent on bringing down the government.
