France to select 'united left' candidate to face far-right in 2027 elections
"A selection of parties on the French left have announced their intention to hold primaries to field a candidate of the 'united left' in the 2027 presidential elections, to better face the challenge of the far-right candidate. Making the announcement on Saturday, Green party leader Marine Tondelier said: "We don't have the right not to offer a perspective to the working classes, to the people of the left.""
"The fragmented nature of the French left means that they run the risk of splitting the vote and failing to qualify for the second round of the crucial presidential election in 2027 - the French two-round system sees the two highest scoring candidates from round one go through to a head-to-head, as voters head back to the polls to pick their preferred choice."
A selection of French left parties will hold primaries to field a 'united left' candidate for the 2027 presidential election to better confront the far-right. Green party leader Marine Tondelier said the left must offer a perspective to working classes and warned that any claim to reach the second round alone is dishonest. The French two-round system risks left vote-splitting and failing to reach the runoff, which previously produced Macron v Le Pen matchups in 2017 and 2022. The primary is set for October 11, six months before the election. Participation by some parties, notably La France Insoumise, remains uncertain.
