France arrests 6 over Palestinian flag on Eiffel Tower
"Hamas's October 2023 attack killed 1,221 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures compiled by AFP. Israeli military operations carried out in retaliation have killed more than 72,700 people in the Palestinian territory, also mostly civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry. Despite an October ceasefire, Gaza remains gripped by daily violence as Israeli strikes continue, with both the military and Hamas accusing one another of violating the truce."
French authorities arrested six people suspected of flying a Palestinian flag from the Eiffel Tower without permission. Extinction Rebellion France claimed responsibility for draping the large flag from the tower’s first floor on Friday afternoon. The group said the action sent support to Palestinians and accused Israel of massacres in Gaza and ecocide crimes, including uprooting olive trees on Palestinian land. The timing coincided with Nakba Day, marking the 1948 displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s creation. Earlier, projections of Israeli and Palestinian flags and peace symbols appeared on the tower ahead of France recognizing the Palestinian state. After Hamas’s October 2023 attacks, the tower was lit with the Israeli flag, and subsequent Israeli operations have killed more than 72,700 people in Palestinian territory, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health ministry figures. Despite an October ceasefire, daily violence continues as both sides accuse each other of violating the truce.
