France and Algeria agree to boost cooperation after diplomatic spat
"After the meeting, Rufo also said that French sports journalist Christophe Gleizes would receive a first consular visit since being detained on terror charges a year ago. Gleizes was sentenced to seven years in prison last December. His family said on Tuesday that he had withdrawn his appeal in the hopes of receiving a presidential pardon."
France and Algeria ended a two-year diplomatic falling-out and agreed to intensify cooperation on domestic security and defence during a meeting between Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune and French armed forces minister Alice Rufo. The meeting also covered cooperation on migration and judicial matters, especially drug trafficking. France’s ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatet, returned to his post after being recalled about a year earlier during the dispute. The diplomatic rupture began in 2024 when France supported a Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. The dispute later expanded to issues including the detention of Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal. Rufo also said French sports journalist Christophe Gleizes would receive a first consular visit after being detained on terror charges and sentenced to seven years in prison.
