Joel Le Scouarnec, a former surgeon, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing 299 children, ranging from 1989 to 2014. Most of the victims were alone in hospital rooms when the assaults took place, some even unconscious. Le Scouarnec admitted to the charges, recognizing the harm done. Prosecutors sought the maximum sentence and additionally requested preventative detention due to concerns about his claims of no longer being attracted to children. Previously, Le Scouarnec served 15 years for similar offenses involving children, prompting investigations into new allegations during this trial.
"I committed odious acts. They were only children... I am aware that these injuries are irreparable. I cannot go back in time, but I owe it to all of these people and their loved ones to take responsibility for my actions."
Prosecutor Stephane Kellenberger made the rare request for a post-sentence preventative detention order, citing concern over Le Scouarnec's claims regarding no longer feeling sexual attraction to children.
