European countries agree to set up 'return hubs' for migrants outside EU
""We have to speed up," said EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner, "to give the people the feeling that we have control over what is happening.""
""Instead of investing in safety, protection, and inclusion, the EU is choosing policies that will push more people into danger and legal limbo," said Silvia Carta of PICUM, an NGO that helps undocumented migrants."
""a widely shared political wish""
Interior ministers in Brussels greenlighted a package of migration measures that would permit opening centres outside EU borders to which rejected asylum seekers would be sent, impose harsher penalties including longer detention for migrants who refuse to leave, and allow returning migrants to third countries that Europe designates as safe even if they are not countries of origin. The proposals need European Parliament approval before taking effect. Governments face intensified public and political pressure amid far-right gains despite a roughly 20 percent drop in irregular entries so far in 2025. Denmark promoted a rapid push while some member states expressed legal scepticism.
