Burkina Faso junta says it foiled coup attempt DW 04/22/2025
Briefly

Burkina Faso's military junta announced on Monday that it had thwarted a coup attempt designed to destabilize the country, claiming that the masterminds are based in Ivory Coast. Interim President Ibrahim Traore accused these foreign elements, specifically naming two former army officers, of plotting an assault on the presidency scheduled for April 16, 2025. This announcement comes amid a wider context of government repression under Traore's rule, following his coup in September 2022, during which dissent against the junta has been aggressively suppressed through arrests and kidnappings.
The meticulous work of the intelligence service has uncovered a major plot being prepared against our country whose ultimate aim is to sow total chaos, said Security Minister Mahamadou Sana.
According to the plan of the terrorist conspirators, the maneuver was to culminate in an assault on the presidency of Burkina Faso on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
The brains outside the country are all located in Ivory Coast, added Minister Sana, mentioning two former army officers as masterminds.
Since the junta took power, it has increasingly cracked down on dissent, with kidnappings and extrajudicial arrests becoming common.
