Budget compromise needed if PM ousted, says French finance minister
"We will take care of the deficits."
"This government is going to fall."
France's government faces a potential collapse as opposition parties plan to bring down Prime Minister François Bayrou in a confidence vote over unpopular austerity measures. Finance Minister Éric Lombard said the government would need to compromise on deficit-cutting plans and make concessions to the left if Bayrou falls, while expressing hope Bayrou will survive. Lombard expressed confidence that Bayrou or a successor could still pass a budget before the year-end deadline and dismissed an imminent debt crisis: "We will take care of the deficits." Bayrou sought last-ditch talks to gain support for a €44bn fiscal squeeze including scrapping two public holidays and freezing most welfare spending.
