""The prime minister must now present his resignation to the President.""
""life-threatening""
""The biggest risk was not to take one, to let things continue without anything changing, to have business as usual.""
François Bayrou lost a confidence vote in the Assemblée nationale by 364 votes to 194 and must present his resignation to the President. The government's fall will produce France's sixth prime minister in two years. Bayrou had called the vote to try to unite parliament behind a 2026 Budget proposing €44 billion in spending cuts, including axing two national public holidays. He described the debt as "life-threatening" and warned that inaction would be the biggest risk. President Emmanuel Macron must now appoint a new prime minister or dissolve parliament. Nationwide strikes in September are expected to continue despite the government’s fall.
