"The prestigious Cinematheque Francaise said Friday it would temporarily close over a bedbug infestation after sightings of the blood-sucking creatures, including during a master class with Hollywood star Sigourney Weaver. The Cinematheque, an internationally renowned film archive and cinema, said in a statement it would close its four screening halls for a month from Friday. The temporary closure, which comes after a series of reported bedbug sightings, should guarantee viewers "a perfectly safe and comfortable environment", it said."
"At the Cinematheque, located in eastern Paris, three screening halls are open to the public while the fourth is used for educational activities. "All the seats will be dismantled and then individually treated with dry steam at 180C several times, before being systematically checked by dogs", the institution said. Carpets will receive the "same level" of treatment. Other areas of the building will remain open, including a current exhibition about US actor and filmmaker Orson Welles."
Cinematheque Francaise will close its four screening halls for one month to address a bedbug infestation following multiple sightings and audience reports of bites, including during a master class with Sigourney Weaver. Audience members reported bedbugs crawling on seats and clothes and experiencing bites. All seats will be dismantled, treated individually with dry steam at 180C several times and then checked by dogs; carpets will receive the same treatment. Three halls remain open to the public while the fourth hosts educational activities, and other building areas, including an Orson Welles exhibition, will stay accessible. Bedbug bites can cause red marks, blisters, rashes, intense itching or allergic reactions, and the French government launched anti-bedbug efforts in 2023 ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
