More than 1,000 firefighters are working to control a wildfire in southern France that has burned over 240 hectares. The fire, detected near Martigues, began violently on Thursday, fueled by winds up to 65km/h. Residents were advised to stay indoors or evacuate, resulting in 104 being sheltered. Local lockdown measures were lifted Friday morning, but certain roads remain closed for emergency access. Additionally, a separate wildfire in Brittany has burned 120 hectares, with 300 firefighters deployed to extinguish the flames. Severe fire risks are present in the Var department.
In total, 104 residents were welcomed into emergency shelters, with some 120 homes dangerously close to the flames.
The fire had started 'quite violently', at around 7.15pm on Thursday, officials said, and was fanned by strong winds that gusted up to 65km/h.
Authorities lifted lockdown measures in the Saint Julien and Les Ventrons areas, meaning those who chose to stay at home could leave their homes.
Seven out of nine forest areas are at 'severe risk of fire' in the Var, the department's prefecture said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
