"Since 2022, when Chez Panisse stirred up controversy over its plans to open a new restaurant right next door to its iconic Berkeley space, details on the eatery have been slim. Now, we finally have an update, thanks to the San Francisco Chronicle: The new venture from Alice Waters appears to be called Bar Panisse, and may soon be ready to open (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms)."
"To make room for Bar Panisse, Chez Panisse opted to evict César, the longtime tapas restaurant next door. The restaurant had subleased the space at 1515 Shattuck Ave. for 24 years, and closed in July 2022 after Chez Panisse declined to renew its lease. Fans of César were enraged, leading to protests and boycotts of Chez Panisse and a petition to save César with over 4,000 signatures."
Chez Panisse intends to open a new adjacent restaurant called Bar Panisse at 1515 Shattuck Ave. The space received final inspections in July and the plywood covering the storefront has been removed. The new venue replaces César, a tapas restaurant that subleased the space for 24 years and closed in July 2022 after Chez Panisse declined to renew the lease, provoking protests, boycotts and a petition with over 4,000 signatures. A draft menu includes housemade potato chips, fritto misto with local vegetables, duck liver mousse crostini, a garden lettuce salad and larger dishes such as steak frites. The bar holds a full liquor license and the space was designed by Studio KDA.
