"When the ferociously spicy Ugly Baby closed late last year, it drew crowds of people to Carroll Gardens desperate to burn their tongues on nam prik korad one last time. It was a closing fans could feel good about. The chef, Sirichai Sreparplarn, a partner explained, simply needed a "long, long break" and planned to work on a cookbook."
"It seemed he was leaving on a high note, and the blow of the loss was softened in February when former employees flipped the space into Hungry Thirsty. Except now, Sreparplarn is back after not so long a break. Over the weekend, news of his return began circulating with the account Yes Williamsburg spreading the word: Ugly Baby will open at 364 Grand Street. Sreparplarn's business partner, Som Kharazami, confirms the news and says they're aiming to open early next year: "Not exactly sure when, but February seems likely.""
"The 2,500-square-foot storefront Sreparplarn & Co. have taken over was until recently home to the original location of Detroit-pizza specialists Emmy Squared. It's a tough location overlooking a particularly busy stretch of the BQE and foot traffic can be sparse, though Ugly Baby never wanted for crowds. One perk of the new room is that it's bigger than the original, and the owners are asking the local community board to approve a full liquor license - including for private parties. (The space has a basement level separate from the main dining room.)"
Ugly Baby closed late last year while chef Sirichai Sreparplarn took a "long, long break" to work on a cookbook. Former employees turned the original Carroll Gardens site into Hungry Thirsty, but Sreparplarn is returning to reopen Ugly Baby at 364 Grand Street, with a likely February opening. The new 2,500-square-foot storefront was formerly Emmy Squared and faces a busy stretch of the BQE. The larger dining room includes a separate basement and the owners are seeking a full liquor license that would allow private parties. The concept will remain, but the menu will be pushed into a wilder place.
