"Per Eater NY tradition, we're taking a look back at the most-read stories of 2025. This recap of the goings-on in the food, restaurant, and chef scenes of New York City this year includes a sudden shutter of the short-lived restaurant from an acclaimed chef, the Manhattan debut of a Brighton Beach favorite grocery store, all of the British Indian restaurants coming to NYC, an award-winning actor opening a cheesesteak shop, and more."
"Michelin-starred places like Korean seafood tasting menu Nōksu and sushi restaurant Icca are dealing with chargebacks on prepaid reservations made with stolen credit cards, which means that someone steals a credit card number, makes a prepaid reservation at a restaurant, and sells said reservation to someone who dines at the restaurant. When the person whose credit card was stolen refutes the charge, the restaurant has to refund that money, leaving it at a loss."
Chef Harold Dieterle abruptly closed his Greenwich Village seafood restaurant Il Totano in January 2025 after only several months of operation; the space reopened eight months later as Nuyores, a Peruvian restaurant from chef Oscar Lorenzzi. Michelin-starred restaurants Nōksu and Icca experienced chargebacks on prepaid reservations purchased with stolen credit cards, forcing refunds and financial losses when cardholders disputed charges. Eastern European Brighton Beach grocer Tashkent Supermarket opened a West Village location in March, bringing its hot bar, samsa pastries, plov, and halal meats to Manhattan. The year's major stories included sudden closures, fraud impacting dining, and notable neighborhood openings.
