Thanksgiving food drives help struggling Bay Area families facing food insecurity: 'Feed everybody'
"This is extremely important. We want to make sure we feed everybody. We want to make sure we don't have hungry people in San Francisco."
"This is all about bringing community together, looking out for each other during this holiday season. We have an affordability crisis in the city and the country. We have to take care of each other. That's what today is about."
"We're seeing a 205% spike in people coming to our food locator -- that's people going online, trying to find food."
With five days until Thanksgiving, Bay Area food drives and giveaways are collecting frozen turkeys and holiday food to assist families facing severe food insecurity. The annual SF Turkey Drive, founded in 2012 by Pierre Smit, benefits the SF-Marin Food Bank and partner agencies and relies on volunteers and community donations. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and local volunteers participated in collections. Demand for food assistance has surged, with a 205% increase in people using the SF-Marin Food Bank’s online food locator, exceeding levels at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drive-thru turkey giveaways in the South Bay provide direct distribution to struggling families. Organizers emphasize an affordability crisis and the need to support organizations like St. Anthony’s to ensure no one in the city goes hungry.
