Thailand is recognized as a vibrant party destination, yet it faces high alcohol prices due to stringent tax laws. This has resulted in both locals and tourists favoring cheaper alternatives, such as local whiskey and rum, particularly the traditional moonshine called lao khao. Lao khao, meaning rice alcohol, offers an economical but rough drinking option, with prices around $2 for a 500ml bottle. Increasingly, certain bars and restaurants are working to enhance the reputation of lao khao by incorporating it into boutique cocktails, reflecting a burgeoning appreciation of local beverages despite their historically low esteem.
Ironically, drinking in Thailand is not cheap. Longstanding laws regulating alcohol keep taxes high, making domestic and imported alcohol pricey for the average person.
Lao khao is rough on the palate and tough on the stomach, but it gets the job done cheaply - around $2 for a 500ml bottle or 30 cents for a 25ml utility bottle.
