Lucinda O'Sullivan's restaurant review: This retro spot has been booked out for weeks, but I finally nabbed a seat and found a joyous vibe plus bags of flavour
"You don't need to be a teenager to enjoy Chubbys in Clontarf for there's something in the joyous colourful atmosphere and vibe, not to mention the grub, that makes everyone feel happy. The decor screams of retro American diners, pink Cadillacs, Vespa scooters and Bill Haley "Rockin' around the clock". Whatever the buzz is about this newish eatery, it's infectious, making it one of the toughest spots around in which to bag a table."
"Barry Stephens first came to notice with his 147 Deli on Parnell Street 10 years ago, when he was just 28. It quickly became the pinnacle of the city's sambo world, with salivating customers scurrying from their city offices and heading daily to D1 for his big fresh luscious meaty numbers. During the pandemic lockdowns, Stephens had the punters queuing again, this time at his Just Chubbys taco truck on the Clontarf Road."
Chubbys in Clontarf combines retro-American diner decor—pink Cadillacs, Vespa scooters and rock-and-roll motifs—with a colourful, joyous atmosphere that appeals beyond teenagers. The menu focuses on hearty, fresh, meaty sandwiches and tacos that elicit enthusiastic customer response. The venue operates at high demand with tables booked for the foreseeable future and very limited availability for walk-ins. Barry Stephens established his reputation with 147 Deli on Parnell Street and then ran the Just Chubbys taco truck on Clontarf Road. Stephens' offerings drew long queues during pandemic lockdowns and continue to generate strong local interest and patronage.
