'It hurt': Guy Fieri on losing $1 million in tequila in a complex heist
"Oh, it hurt. It hurt bad."
"I'm like, it - it's not a needle in a haystack. I mean, this is a semi-tractor truck,"
"My mind is swimming in exactly how do you lose, you know, that many thousands of bottles of tequila?"
Two truckloads carrying 24,000 bottles of Santo Tequila vanished after crossing from Mexico into Laredo, Texas, while en route to a Pennsylvania distribution center. The shipment consisted of more than 4,000 cases, including 2,000 cases each of blanco and reposado and 40 cases of a three-year aged Extra Anejo Single Barrel. The theft occurred through a double-brokering scheme in which the contracted carrier subcontracted to fake trucking companies with phony letterheads, email addresses and phone numbers. Manipulated GPS data made the trucks appear delayed but still headed to Pennsylvania while the shipment was diverted to Los Angeles. Guy Fieri described the loss as painful and expressed disbelief at how such a large quantity could be lost.
