How Warriors' Steph Curry gets around a California liquor law in his new bar
"You'd be forgiven for assuming that the massive, opulent new bar in the former lobby of the Westin St. Francis is the much-reported cocktail lounge from Golden State Warrior Steph Curry. Marble columns, chandeliers and an analog clock hovering above the golden central bar give the room a Gilded Age train station look. It may be the most glam lobby bar in all of San Francisco now, but it's part of chef Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak restaurant."
"Curry's bar, named the Eighth Rule, is located down a hallway on the Geary Street side of the hotel, and was opened in partnership with the Mina Group, but is a very different space. There's no food, for now, no two-story ceiling, no giant clock. Its two narrow rooms seat around 40 people total, and the bar takes reservations for 90-minute visits (longer for larger groups), whether that's for the tasting menu experience or a regular visit."
"The back room, through a narrow doorway at the end of the first, looks more like a cigar lounge inside a train car, with dark paneled walls, patchwork leather couches, deep-brown and burnt-umber leather club chairs, floor rugs and coffee tables down the middle. A red felt pool table wouldn't look out of place, but there is no room for one."
The Westin St. Francis contains two distinct bar experiences: a massive, opulent lobby bar that is part of Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak, and the Eighth Rule, a narrow, reservation-only cocktail lounge created in partnership with Steph Curry and the Mina Group. The Eighth Rule seats around 40 people across two rooms, currently serves no food, and limits visits to 90 minutes. The first room features upright seating, a wraparound bench and recessed bar; the back room evokes a cigar lounge with dark paneled walls and leather club chairs. The lounge excludes televisions, neon signs, beer buckets and sportsbar trappings, keeping a focused cocktail atmosphere.
