The Dordogne Valley features ancient towns and a vibrant market scene, particularly in Brive, famous for its large Saturday market. This bustling market showcases approximately 200 stallholders offering local produce, including strawberries, garlic, cheeses, and walnuts. Highlights include the unique 22m-high lighthouse, originally built as a water tower in the 1830s. The region is historically significant for walnut cultivation dating back to the 10th century, making it France's leading walnut-growing area today.
The market largely takes over the car park on one side of Avenue du 14 Juillet, next to the Halle Brassens which is used as a livestock market.
Walnuts have been cultivated in the Dordogne Valley since the 10th century, although they arrived in France several hundred years earlier, probably brought by the Romans.
