Berkeley's most famous pizzeria is finally expanding after 8-year delay
"Finally, after recovering from the pandemic in a way that we felt more stable, we were actually able to buy the building because our landlords were selling."
"The big impetus behind the expansion from the outset, even prepandemic, was to allow for better flow through the store and a better customer experience."
"Because if you've been to the Cheese Board, you know that on the bakery side, it's really cramped and really hard to navigate."
Cheese Board Collective began construction to expand its cheese shop and bakery at 1504 Shattuck Ave. into the adjacent former grocery at 1500 Shattuck Ave. The project was delayed after taking the lease in 2018 and by the pandemic, then resumed once the cooperative purchased the building. The pizzeria reopens soon while the bakery and cheese shop will operate temporarily from a shipping container on Shattuck Avenue beginning Jan. 20. Drip coffee and espresso will be available; cold brew is paused. Construction should finish in late spring or early summer, increasing cheese space, restoring sampling, and returning the playing-card system.
